Why have I not received my tax refund?

This is a summary of the most frequent reasons why you may not have received your tax refund on the date stated on your original tax decision and why the refund’s amount may be different.

First of all, you can log in to MyTax to see whether changes were made to the date or amount. You do not need to contact the Tax Administration about the matter if you find the answers in MyTax yourself.

The bank will transfer the amount later during the banking day.
Tax refunds are paid out in such a way that some taxpayers receive their refunds later during the day, not necessarily in the morning.

You added, edited or corrected your pre-completed tax return, or your spouse did the same.
After you took action to add information or amounts of money, to edit or to make corrections to your pre-completed tax return, or your spouse did that, the exact amount and date of the refund may have changed. In any case, when all corrections and revisions are taken care of, the Tax Administration will send new decisions both to you and your spouse by late October if not earlier. The new decision will contain information about the tax refund, its size, and the date when you will receive it.

The Tax Administration received information that affects your tax assessment.
There may be new information, which affects your tax assessment, coming from a third party. In most cases, the third-party reporter of payments and other information is an employer company. If the Tax Administration receives information that affects your tax assessment, we will send you a notice that your assessment is delayed and your refund date is postponed.

Some other taxes had fallen due.
If the records show that you have left taxes unpaid past their due dates, the Tax Administration will settle them with the money that would otherwise be refunded. Read more about the use of tax refunds.

The Tax Administration does not have your bank account number.
There may be a typing error in the bank account number you have given, or the account may be closed, or you have not given or updated your bank account number. In this case, you will receive a money order refund. Read more about refunds paid out as a money order.

Your tax refund is less than €10.
The assessment for the past tax year may indicate that you should be given a refund, but the amount is low. The Tax Administration does not refund any amounts below €10. However, the low-amount refundable will stay saved, and it will be applied later as a settlement of a new tax you owe, or alternatively, it will be added to another future tax refund, so you will receive it that way.

Not all your tax returns are submitted to the Tax Administration.
You have forgotten to submit a certain tax return (such as a VAT return), or you have submitted all returns, but you have forgotten to include all the required information. After you have attended to the above problems – submitted the returns or made the corrections that were needed – we will send you your refund.

Debt recovery process by the Enforcement Authority is ongoing.
The money that would otherwise be refunded to you will be applied on the amounts you owe.

Refund paid into an account may show only after a delay of 1 to 2 days (an account with a foreign bank).
In the case of a foreign bank account, you need to allow 1–2 days to international transfers of funds.
